Coping With COPD

Work Life

It is recommended most COPD sufferers continue to work. However, you will need to discuss your workload with your employer – especially if your role involved physical activities. You can reduce your workload and hours to ensure you are not overburdened, or explore the option of moving to another role within the business.

Your doctor will help you assess your work-related needs, based on how you are limited by COPD. You are also entitled to ask your employer to make reasonable adjustments to help you reintegrate into the workplace upon your return.

Emotional Wellbeing

Make sure to look after your emotional wellbeing and consider the changes you will have to make in your life. For many COPD sufferers, depression, frustration, anger and other emotional stresses are common after diagnosis of the condition. Stay as active as possible and make sure to get as much exercise as you can manage.

It is also important to open up to family and friends about your COPD; don’t be afraid to ask for help. Shutting out the people who are closest to you can lead to the breakdown of relationships. You should ask your doctor about available support for your emotional wellbeing, so you are better able to care for your mental health.
