4 Breakfasts that Your Diabetes will Love

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but for many who have diabetes, it can be a meal that is plagued with sugars and full of pitfalls. Although many people can be out the door with just a coffee and a granola bar, it’s crucial for a diabetic patient to have a full breakfast that is full of nutrients to start the day out right.

Scrambled Eggs and Toast

You can’t really go wrong with the breakfast classic of scrambled eggs and toast. Scramble your egg is a nonstick pan with cooking spray (and not butter) and opt for whole-wheat toast with a light butter substitute or sugar-free jam.

Breakfast Burrito

Is there anything better than having a fiesta for breakfast in the morning? A healthy way to stay full all day is to whip yourself up a breakfast burrito before you head off to work or get the kids off to school. Scramble up some eggs in a nonstick pan along with some green peppers and onions or spinach. Warm up a whole-wheat tortilla, sprinkle in some nonfat cheese, add a touch of salsa or avocado, and you’ve got a stick-to-your-ribs breakfast that’ll keep you full until lunch.

A Big Steaming Bowl of Oatmeal

Oatmeal is one of the healthiest breakfasts out there—and for good reason. Oats are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants and can include manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, zinc, and Vitamin B. Studies have also shown that unsweetened oatmeal can help decrease insulin resistance in some diabetes patients. To make it taste a little better add some fruit, nuts, plain Greek yogurt to jazz it up a little and incorporate additional food groups.

You can easily prepare a big batch of oatmeal in an instant pot, rice cooker, or simply a single serving in the microwave every day.

An English Muffin

The English muffin is the unsung hero of the breakfast table: It’s versatile, filled with nutrients and grains, and is delicious. You can top your English muffin with sugar-free jam, peanut butter, almond butter, avocado, or even low-fat ricotta to make it a little more interesting in the morning. Eat it alongside a nice piping hot cup of tea and you have yourself a great breakfast.
